She wants justice for designer son Anand Jon

By Radhika Bhirani

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS) Shashi Abraham, the mother of US-based designer Anand Jon, is leaving no stone unturned to fight for justice for her son who was arrested eight months back on charges of rape and sexual harassment of 30 women in that country.

She and daughter Sanjana are on their second visit to India since Anand's arrest last year and are holding candle light vigils as well as seeking government intervention to free Anand, who Shashi claims is a victim of "professional rivalry".

"The charges against my son are an unfortunate consequence of professional rivalry and racial attack," Shashi told IANS.

"Not many designers make it big internationally. Seeing my son, especially a 'brown boy', score exceptional success was probably not acceptable by many people there who eventually conspired against my son."

Just last week they organised a candle light vigil at the India Gate in protest against the designer's arrest. "I was happy to witness a large crowd during our vigil. The media is my only channel to communicate to people that my son is innocent. And it makes me glad to see the media support we are getting here in India," Shashi said.

New York-based Anand, touted by US magazine Newsweek as the designer to watch out in 2007, was waiting for a funding of $10-15 million by Wallstreet March 20. But a fortnight prior to that police picked him up.

The bail amount for Anand has been priced at a whopping $2 million.

"We have all the evidence at hand to prove his innocence but only if we are given one chance. My son is being denied basic civil rights and that is highly cruel and inhuman on their (judiciary's) part," complained Shashi.

In case Anand is proven guilty, he could be jailed for more than one 'jail term' that amounts to over 25 years.

Anand, as Shashi fondly reminiscences, is a typical Indian boy bestowed with traditional values, thus making him a complete family person.

"Anand is proud to be an Indian and is a true cultural ambassador of the country."

"My son is a decent, respectable boy who has always been protective of my daughter and me. I refuse to believe any accusations of rape or molestation made against him," she added emphatically.

Shashi along with Anand's supporters will be organising yet another candle light vigil in Mumbai Jan 21 at the Gateway of India.

Anand Jon's family claim he is framed

NDTV Correspondent
Friday, January 11, 2008 (New Delhi)
Friends and family of Indian designer Anand Jon in an attempt to save him say that competitors have conspired to malign him.

The Indian designer is accused of rape, 32 counts of them apart from sexual assault and lewd acts on a child. He's been locked up in a Los Angeles jail since March last year.

Friend and model Ella Charanin, is in India with a message that Anand Jon is a nice guy. Jon's family also insists he's been framed.

Ella said, ''I worked with him for a year and so I know. All the girls who were with him never said anything, so I know it isn't true.''

Jon's sister Sanjana has been crusading for him. She and Ella have met Overseas Minister Vyalar Ravi, but are not certain whether India would intervene in this matter.

Sanjana said, ''It is a conspiracy only after Wall Street funded about US$ 10-15 million, that's when the complaints started emerging. Tell me why wasn't it before that.''

All these issues will come up before the US courts soon when Jon undergoes trial.

Anand Jon’s sister seeks Centre’s help

NEW DELHI: Claiming that he was “innocent,” the sister of Indian designer Anand Jon, who is facing a slew of charges relating to sexual assault in the United States, has sought the Government’s help to get him out of jail.

Sanjana Jon met Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi here and sought his help to get Anand out of jail, claiming that he was innocent.

Mr. Ravi gave her a patient hearing and asked her to furnish details about the case and give a petition so that he could look into the matter.

“I have asked her to give me a petition from her mother which can be forwarded to the External Affairs Ministry as only it can take up the matter at the diplomatic level if needed,” Mr. Ravi told PTI.

Ms. Sanjana claimed that Anand was “being demonised” because of his success in the American fashion industry.

Overseas minister bats for Anand Jon

NDTV Correspondent

Saturday, January 5, 2008 (New Delhi)

Can India intervene in the judicial process of another country, is a question many are asking.

The speculation follows Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi's statement on Friday, where he said he would persuade the external affairs ministry to take up the case of New York-based fashion designer Anand Jon.

Jon has been charged with committing multiple sexual offences.

Ravi said the number of complaints cropping up against Jon in New York and Florida seemed to suggest the designer was ''framed''.

When NDTV tried to speak to the minister, he was unavailable for comment.

Meanwhile, Jon's mother is in Delhi, hoping to ask External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to intervene on her son's behalf, but the Indian government is unlikely to agree.

This is not the first time Ravi has tried to help Jon. Last year, when Jon's family had approached the minister, he had asked Indian diplomats in the US to provide consular help to the fashion designer.

Anand Jon has been held in detention in Los Angeles since June 2007 after about 30 women in various American cities charged him with rape and molestation.

"Government should help my son"

As fashion designer Anand Jon languishes in jail in the US, after being accused of molestation, his mother Shashi Abraham has spoken exclusively to TIMES NOW. She has appealed to the Indian government to step in and help Anand Jon, who she says should be given a chance to fight his case.

"My son is innocent" - Shashi Abraham

"Anand has made India proud all these years. And he is not a person with a criminal record - and he has got his Indian values.

"Just based on allegation of a few girls, today he is prison. That is not right, there should be somebody to ask. We need justice here. Anand should be given a chance and defend himself.

"Everybody is asking me, why so many girls are coming - I have the same question to ask: Where were these two girls all this time?

"They are all aggressive and progressive girls - they know how to dial a 911 - but not even one single call... now suddenly, everybody is coming and saying this happened in 2001,2002, 2003, 2004, 2005. And still they were hanging around with him? Does that make any sense at all?

"He is a fashion designer. You can't accuse him saying he touched me here, touched me there. People get into this knowing fully well that the industry is like this - there is a lot of nudity, there is a lot of interaction between men and women. But my son is being accused of molestation and rape, which he is not capable of doing.

"I am sure that a lot of people would be watching this - We need everybody's help. And our Government has to - it must - step in. They have to ask the US government give our citizen a chance for a fair trial. For that he needs a bail which he can afford, and come out and fight. And he will prove his innocence,. Untill and unless a chance is given to him to come out and fight, it's very difficult, and I don't know whether we are going to get justice.

"I don't know, because I had great trust in the legal system there. But I am scared - I'm really scared with the way things are going - how one can just lock up somebody on allegations. It is high time - maybe our government has never stepped in into a case like this. But they should, Our voice should be heard. There is an innocent person, he needs justice."

Designer son Jon jailed in LA, mother comes to Delhi seeking government help

Express news service

New Delhi, January 5 six months after NRI designer Anand Jon was jailed in Los Angeles over multiple charges of sexual assault and molestation, his mother Shashi Abraham is now in the Capital to seek help from the Manmohan Singh government.

Citing the case of Mohammed Haneef — arrested on terror charges in Australia and later released following New Delhi’s intervention — Abraham said Jon is a victim of “professional rivalry” and “racial slur” because of his “meteoric rise to fame”.

Abraham is now trying to get an appointment with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the Human Rights Association. She claims she did not get “assurance” from External Affairs Minister for State E Ahmad. “If the Indian government could come forward to help Dr Haneef when he was unjustly accused in Australia, why can they not do the same for my son?” Abraham asked.

“The whole thing started right after The Wall Street Journal evaluated his brand for $10 million,” Abraham claimed. “He was going places in an industry where not many Indians had made any breakthrough. I guess this is a conspiracy by his detractors to pull him down,” she said.

On Thursday, Abraham's daughter Sanjana had convened a press conference in Mumbai, announcing that they had enlisted the help of Mumbai-based lawyer Majeed Memon. “I am sure that if we get the opportunity of a fair trial we could prove that these complaints are baseless,” Sanjana said.

Known for dressing celebrities like Paris Hilton, Paula Abdul and Ivanka Trump and touted by Newsweek as the designer to watch out for in 2007, 33-year-old Jon’s fall from grace was pretty swift.

Anand Jon's sister seeks India's help

Indian designer Anand Jon, who faces a slew of charges related to sexual assault and molestation in the US, is a victim of racism and jealousy, his sister alleged on Wednesday.

"This demonisation is happening because he broke into an industry where Americans find difficult to break into," claimed Sanjana, Anand's younger sister.

Jon, an Indian citizen jailed in Los Angeles since June 2007, is facing charges of rape and molestation from 30 women in several American states.

According to Sanjana, the complaints started pouring in after the Wall Street valued his brand name at $10 million. She rubbished the entire sequence of events as illogical because the number of alleged victims continued to grow.

"After the valuation, his company started attracting more investments. Some of these complaints date back to five years. Why did these girls not file complaints immediately?" Sanjana told IANS, fighting back her tears.

The first complaint was filed on March 6, 2007, when Anand was planning to launch his denim line in association with a company called Genisis.

Jon's lawyer Majid Memon also felt there was a possibility that Anand's phenomenal success raised a few eyebrows.

"Jon's rivals could not digest his financial independence and his success, especially as he was an Indian. It is a well-planned conspiracy against him," Memon told IANS. He is planning to leave for the US soon to secure Jon's release.

He dubbed some of the complaints as ridiculous and absurd. He said there was no medical evidence of sexual assault in any of the cases.

Sanjana is seeking help of the Indian government in defending her brother and wants to create public awareness about her brother's plight as she thinks he has been unfairly targeted.

Fashion designer's kin fire back at rape accusers

BY ANN GIVENS | ann.givens@newsday.com

Anand Jon, the Long Island fashion designer who was called a person to watch in Newsweek's "Who's Next 2007" issue last year, has become famous for all the wrong reasons since that electrifying prediction.

The self-described playboy, once known for walking the red carpet with hordes of beautiful women in tow, has been accused of being a serial rapist, with nearly 30 aspiring models in three states accusing him of taking advantage of their naiveté to force them into unwanted sex.

But Jon's supporters, who last week got their first glimpse of many of the case's details when new court papers were released in California, have come back swinging. They say many of the women who are accusing Jon, 33, took pains to remain in his company even after the alleged attacks - dining with him, modeling for him, even traveling from state to state by his side.

"We are just confused," said Jon's sister Sanjana Jon, who lived with her brother before his arrest and is one of his closest confidantes. "Why would you keep following the person around if you are being violated by him?"

Spokeswomen for the Manhattan and Los Angeles district attorney's offices would not comment on the details of the case, or on Jon's relationship to his accusers.

But Gloria Allred, a Los Angeles attorney for one of the women who says Jon raped her, said it's a mistake to blame the women for their behavior.

"That's an old script, and I'm sure in the case of many women it's not justified," she said. She said her client, Natalie Pack, 29, broke ties with Jon after she was raped. She has asked to be named to encourage other rape victims to come forward.

Jon, who has dressed VIPs from rock star Prince to Prince Michel of Yugoslavia, according to his Web site, is being held in Los Angeles on $2.1 million bail. He faces nearly 100 felony and misdemeanor rape and other sex crime charges relating to nearly 30 women in New York, California and Texas.

Prosecutors say Jon forced numerous women, who ranged in age from 14 to 23, to have sex with him in exchange for the chance to be photographed in his designs, appear with him on the red carpet or wear his clothes on the runway. Most of the women were not professional models, but aspiring ones, Sanjana Jon said. All hoped to be discovered, she said.

Sanjana Jon said one paid her own way to travel with Jon after she said she was attacked, and another tried on clothes at his Manhattan apartment.

"They're relying on the quantity of witnesses, not the quality of evidence," said William Petrillo of Rockville Centre, Jon's New York attorney. "That's the exact opposite of what the judge will instruct a jury to do."

Majeed Memon has an overseas assignment

Mumbai: Fashion designer Anand Jon, whos is facing various charges related to sexual assault and molestation in US, is being targetted and is a victim of racism and jealousy due to the success he has achieved in the fashion industry, his sister alleged on Wednesday.

Sanjana Jon, who is in Mumbai to seek support from Indians, said that her brother was being demonised because he achieved success in fashion industry which even Americans could not achieve. Acording to her, all the charges against her brother have been fabricated.

Jon, an Indian citizen was arrested on March 6, released on bail and later rearrested. He is jailed in Los Angeles and is charged with over 40 counts of rape and molestation, in cases filed by 30 women from several American states.

Sanjana alleged that all the cases were lodged after the Wall Street valued his brand name at $10 million (Rs 39.5 crore) and announced an investment of about $15 million in his company, Jeanisis.

Sanjana has appointed, Majeed Memon, a noted criminal lawyer to fight her brother's case. Memom would be flying to the US by the end of this month to defend Anad Jon, who is facing rape and molestation charges.

Rubbishing some of the complaints against Anand, Memom said that there were no medical evidence of sexual assault in the cases. He further added that Anand has been accused of raping a woman but when it was checked, it was found that the victim said to the police that the alleged rape happened a year ago. He said that there are many such baseless charges filed against Anand Jon.

The lawyer that he would be placing the matter before the Prime Minister's office and the External Affairs Ministry to bring some pressure on the US so that Jon could have a free and fair trail. The lawyer would also appeal to the international human rights commission to get Anand justice.

Anand Jon demonised for his success: Sister

Indian designer Anand Jon, who is facing a slew of charges related to sexual assault and molestation in United States, was ''being demonised'' because of his success in the American fashion industry, his sister alleged in Mumbai on Wednesday.

''Racial discrimination could be a factor,'' he added.

Dubbing some of the complaints as ''ridiculous and absurd'' Memon said there was no medical evidence of sexual assault in any of the cases.

Sanjana said complaints made no sense because the complainants continued to go around with Anand after the alleged incidents.

''Some of them came to India with us after the incident's date...Does this make sense?'' she said.

Asked what help she expects from Indian government, she said she merely wanted to create awareness about her brother's predicament through the Indian media.

Advocate Memon -- who is also a member of Nationalist Congress Party -- added that they would be approaching the Prime Minister's Office in this regard.

Anand Jon’s family battles for his freedom

Mumbai: The family members and friends of US-based NRI designer Anand Jon, who has been in American jails for nearly nine months now, said that he may be a victim of "racial discrimination" has decided to take the battle ahead and rest only when the youth is free.

Jon's sister Sanjana Jon has met leading lawyer Majeed Memon, and at a hurriedly convened news conference on Wednesday and they alleged that Anand has been made a victim of circumstances because fame and fortune was coming to him. They also did not rule out racial discrimination. Anand reportedly faces charges like molestation and sexual abuse.

Memon, who has taken up several high profile briefs including defending music composer Nadeem in the United Kingdon, has said that they will approach the Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of External Affairs. "My first duty will be to approach the US attorneys, who till now had been defending him," he said.

They will also approach the Human rights commission in India and in US besides other international human rights organisation. "We are going to talk about legal rights, human rights and constitutional rights," he said.

Sanjana broke down several times as she narrated what she and her mother went through since the last few months. "Anand has been kept in solitary confinement, he is chained – and this we have seen when we met him in the Los Angeles jail," she said.

Memon said that the charges against Jon will not stand before a "judicial mind". "Some of the charges are like attempt being made to kiss," he said and pointed out that where rape has been alleged – the DNA examination has turned out to be negative.

Sanjana said that it all started when Anand was about to receive lot of money for his projects after the Wall Street Journal evaluated his brand value at USD 10 million and nearly USD 10 to 15 million was expected. "Neither does he smoke, drink nor he is into drugs," she said.

"Some people could not digest his astronomical success," Memon said hinting out at some US fashion industry lobby may be involved in defaming him. "Racial discrimination can be there," he said and pointed out that the irony is that there are 30 to 40 different cases in different places.

Sister of jailed Indian-born US designer Anand Jon pleads for justice

Sister of Indian-born US fashion designer Anand Jon has pleaded for justice for her brother, calling him being demonized in the American fashion industry.

Anand Jon, 33, a rising designer who has dressed socialite Paris Hilton and singer Janet Jackson, has been held in jail on charges of raping or sexually assaulting 20 young would-be models.

Sanjana Jon said her brother paid the price for his success in the American fashion industry.

"This demonization of Jon is basically because he succeeded in an industry where Americans find it difficult to break into and he did break in and made a mark. 2007 Newsweek picked him as someone to watch out for with Hillary Clinton and Obama Barak on the cover, the only designer to have been picked up was Anand," said Sanjana.

"Last year, Wallstreet evaluated Anand Jon as the brand name at 10 million and they were going to put another 10-15 million into the company. This is where the whole problem started. If you look at the case people are going back to five years, why did they come now only when the company got funded?," she added.
Sanjana's lawyer said they would appeal against the charges.
"Our fight itself is basically against hurling false and baseless and unsubstantiated allegations. We will make out a case that we have sufficient circumstances, sufficient facts and material which would make out a strong case of our apprehensions being justified," said Majid Memon. nand Jon, who has appeared on the U.S. TV show "America's Next Top Model" and was named by Newsweek magazine in its list of people to watch in 2007, was arrested in March last year at his Beverly Hills home.

He was initially charged with rape, sexual battery, lewd acts on a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. (ANI)

Sister bats for ‘demonised’ designer

Mumbai, Jan. 2 (PTI): Indian designer Anand Jon, who is facing a slew of sexual assault and molestation charges in the US, is “being demonised” because of his success in the American fashion industry, his sister alleged today.

Majeed to defend NRI in US

Noted criminal lawyer Majeed Memon has an overseas assignment. He would take a flight to the US by the end of this month to defend NRI designer Anand Jon, who has 34 rape and molestation charges against his name.

The accused has been on trial for the past seven months in the courts at Los Angeles and Texas.

Anand’s sister Sanjana met Memon in the city to ensure that he would be there in the US, fighting for her brother, when the case comes up for hearing on January 30.

Sanjana said, “We fear that Anand would not be given a fair chance to defend himself. Perhaps, only a lawyer India would fight for him without prejudice.”

Memon said, “I will place the matter before the prime minister and the external affairs ministry by mid-January. It will help me get detailed information from the Indian embassy in the US.”

Anand was arrested on March 6 for allegedly molesting and raping 34 women. But according to his sister, the charges were fabricated. Memon said, “One of the charges against him was that he tried to kiss a woman.

He has also been accused of raping a woman. But when it was checked, it was found that the victim had said to the police that the alleged rape happened a year ago. There are many such baseless charges filed against him.”

The lawyer would also appeal to the international human rights commission to get Anand justice. Sanjana said that her brother had been kept in chains for the past seven months.

Repeated pleas for bail went in vain. “Anand was out on bail once, just for a month. He was rearrested in May and had since been in jail,” she said.

Sanjana made it clear that her brother was a victim of racial discrimination. “We have documentary evidences showing how the girls had been conspiring against Anand, but we have not been given a chance to prove our point.”

Sanjana in city to fight for brother Anand

3 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,AFSANA AHMED ,Times of India

The fashion world might have given up on Indian-born, LA-based designer Anand Jon who is behind bars after several charges of rape and molestation were levelled against him last year.

But not designer sister Sanjana. The new year has brought her down to Mumbai. And from here, she intends to wage a war against the legal system in US that has done in her celebrity brother who once dressed the likes of Paris Hilton, Janet Jackson and Bruce Springsteen.

“I had immense faith in the American legal system but increasingly, I find things are getting murkier,” admitted Sanjana to BT yesterday. “I am here to appeal for my brother, not just as a sister, but as an Indian. He is being majorly victimised and discriminated there because of his colour,” alleged Sanjana.

Her only hope, now, appears to be Mumbai-based criminal lawyer Majeed Memon who believes the facts and circumstances of the case hint at a conspiracy by some powerful people in the US to ruin the hard-earned reputation by the talented Indian. “The possibility of racial discrimination cannot be wholly ruled out at this stage,” added Memon. “However, since our fight is primarily against the hurling of false, unsubstantiated and irresponsible allegations with extralegal motivation, we shall exercise constraint before accusing anyone and get to the bottom of the truth.”

Of the charges levelled against her brother, Sanjana said, “Being a woman, I will support and do anything for a rape victim. But if the woman is lying for selfish intention, then she needs to be thoroughly punished. And I have enough material to prove that Anand is increasingly getting buried in lie after lie. He is tied to the wall with a chain. His civil rights have been taken away. What sort of justice is this?”

According to her, an attempted kiss in greeting here and a touch there while taking measurements have been trumped up into rape charges. “Some of the girls who have filed charges against Anand have hung out and partied with us even after their alleged ‘rapes’ of five years ago. Isn’t that ridiculous,” asked Sanjana.

She believes Anand’s success, the funding of his company, and Wall Steet Journal evaluating the business at $10 million has made all the ‘victims’ greedy.

Anand Jon is treated like animal: Sister

Mumbai, Jan 2: Indian designer Anand Jon, who is facing a slew of charges related to sexual assault and molestation in United States, was "being demonised" because of his success in the American fashion industry, his sister alleged here today.

Appearing in RKB Show of Sahara Samay Mumbai, Sanjana told that her brother was kept in small cage from where he was taken out once in two days.

It was very hard for her to stop tears rolling down his face while she described the animal-like treatment being meted out to her brother in prison.

Sanjana told that her family was allowed to meet him once in two days. She also alleged that Anand was put in chains all the time.

She was surprised that this kind of inhuman treatment was meted out to her brother barely on the basis of accusations.

Jon, an Indian citizen, is facing complaints of either rape or molestation from 30 women in several states of the US. Since June this year, he has been in jail in Los Angeles.
